What is Surrogate Therapy?

Dear Sara,

Surrogate Therapy is a form of therapy that mental health professionals use to help those who have had damaging experiences regarding relationships and sexual intimacy. Some may have had physical, sexual, and/or mental abuse as a child or as an adult. Abandonment as a child could leave someone seeking this type of therapy. Other reasons someone may seek this would be gender confusion, inability to become sexually aroused, and the worst the client/patient may have been raped.

Surrogate Therapy is with a therapist, surrogate, and client/patient. The surrogate will be used for creating emotional, intimate, and sexual experiences. Sometimes they will be used to just simulate conversations that would be had if the client/patient was in a relationship. The process is to show the client/patient that they are capable of having a normal and healthy relationship. This type of therapy will enable them to go out and have a comfort level that many enter the therapy without.

So you asked if the surrogate has sex with the client/patient…well in some instances yes. Not all clients/patients are needing sexual intercourse to heal. Some it may be just learning how to allow someone to get physically close to them again. People who have been abused severely may not be capable of allowing someone to touch them. So in Surrogate Therapy this is worked out in role play using the surrogate.

I hope this answers your question. I honestly feel like I missed out on my opportunity to play the surrogate role. Sounds perfect for a sex addict like me.

Kisses,
